The Catholic bishops of Australia have released the Social Justice Statement 2020-21, on the critical subject of mental health, in the lead-up to Social Justice Sunday on August 30. This unspoken attitude is reflected in chronic government neglect and underfunding of care for people who suffer from mental illness. From this year, the date for Social Justice Sunday has shifted to the last Sunday in August. The isolation, unemployment, loss of income and restrictions on social contact have been breeding grounds for anxiety and depression, leading to an increased risk of suicide. So we will celebrate Social Justice Sunday on 30 August. Social justice entails equal access to liberties, rights, and opportunities, as well as care for the least advantaged members of society. As is true of all people who live with disadvantage, people who suffer from mental illness are rarely noticed except in the few cases when they act irrationally, writes Fr Andrew Hamilton SJ.
